About Coffee for Climate

Reduce, Reuse, Reclaim

Founded in 2022, Coffee for Climate was started by Isabel Caldera, Kevyn Orr, and Paulina Trudeau, who met at Yale Young Global Scholars. The initiative places our focus on informing coffee drinkers about the potential Spent Coffee Grounds (SCG) have and the environmental advantages of their usage. The initiative's goal is to use what would otherwise be trash and convert it into something practical for everyday use.

Coffee for Climate works closely with cafés and coffee producers in Nicaragua and Washington, DC, to use what would be trash and turn it into treasure. By using SCGs which are the excess particles remaining after the coffee has been brewed, we can create coffee logs. Coffee logs burn 20% hotter than firewood and save up to 130% of emissions. SCGs can also be used as a fertilizer serving as an alternative to other fertilizers which contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.

Our greater goal is to end the deforestation of rainforests and deciduous forests around the world by ending firewood consumption in exchange for a more sustainable and efficient method through coffee logs.
